Had an early swim and breakfast at the hotel. On the way in from the Cairns Airport when I first arrived here in Australia, I spotted an interesting looking sailmaking storefront shop and decided to go back today. I like the idea of integrating unconventional and industrial textiles into clothing and accessories and when I saw this shop I thought nautical materials and colors could be a source of inspiration for this project. A very helpful employee explained to me what these textiles were and how they are applied. Some materials such as spinnaker nylon, mylar, kevlar and vinyl are traditionally used in sailmaking, but because of their durability could also be a good material for a travel bag. After leaving the sail shop, I packed up my things and headed to Hinterland Aviation at the Cairns airport, where I took a small propellor plane over the greenish turquoise water of the Great Barrier Reef. The approach onto this secluded island was breathtaking.
