Day 2 – Lizard Island

Had an early swim and breakfast at the hotel. On the way in from the Cairns Airport when I first arrived here in Australia, I spotted an interesting looking sailmaking storefront shop and decided to go back today. I like the idea of integrating unconventional and industrial textiles into clothing and accessories and when I saw this shop I thought nautical materials and colors could be a source of inspiration for this project. A very helpful employee explained to me what these textiles were and how they are applied. Some materials such as spinnaker nylon, mylar, kevlar and vinyl are traditionally used in sailmaking, but because of their durability could also be a good material for a travel bag. After leaving the sail shop, I packed up my things and headed to Hinterland Aviation at the Cairns airport, where I took a small propellor plane over the greenish turquoise water of the Great Barrier Reef. The approach onto this secluded island was breathtaking.

Upon my arrival, I had iced hibiscus tea and a sandwich, then a great massage at the spa and headed straight for a walk onĀ  the powdery white sand beach. The island boasts over 22 beaches, all with their own unique characteristics. Some are rocky with large boulders you can climb on and watch the sunset, as I did. I was fitted for my snorkel, mask and fins and booked a small motor boat for tomorrow morning, when I will go and explore some other beaches on Lizard Island. Finished my travel day with an amazing dinner at Osprey’s restaurant where I had some great oysters and received an education in Australian cheese.
Looking forward to getting out on the Great Barrier Reef tomorrow.

Why all these details about sunsets and food? Is there going to be a food storage in the travel bag? What colors were you thinking the luggage will come in?
